Some wedding days are carefully choreographed. Others get a little help from Mother Nature. For Lauren and Nathan’s late-May wedding at the Cleveland Yachting Club, the forecast delivered sunshine, beautiful Lake Erie views, and enough wind to give Lauren’s veil a starring role. Lauren jokingly declared that “the wind was a paid actor.” Perfectly stated.
Long before the wind made its appearance, Lauren and Nathan’s Cleveland wedding day was already filled with the moments that mattered most.
The day began with one of our favorite wedding-day moments: a first look. Away from a buzz of activity, Lauren and Nathan had a chance to see each other for the first time, take a breath, and simply enjoy being together. There were plenty of emotions, a few happy tears, and the kind of genuine reactions that make first looks so meaningful to photograph.
Their private vows brought another layer of emotion. There was laughter, tears of joy, and plenty of evidence that these two know exactly how to make each other smile. Those quiet moments are often some of my favorites from a wedding day. Not because they are perfectly posed, but because they are completely real.
Then came the ceremony, and it couldn't have asked for a more beautiful Northeast Ohio setting.
Lauren and Nathan exchanged vows outdoors with the Cleveland Yachting Club docks and waterways providing a gorgeous backdrop, with Lake Erie just beyond. The late-May sunshine was spectacular, bathing the ceremony in warm, natural light.
And then there was the wind. It arrived with enthusiasm. Lauren's veil repeatedly caught the breeze, creating fun, dramatic and unscripted moments.
During golden hour, we took advantage of the Cleveland Yachting Club's waterfront setting for relaxed portraits of Lauren and Nathan. The goal wasn't to spend hours pulling them away from their guests. Instead, we kept things moving, mixing natural moments with a few creative portraits while allowing plenty of time for them to simply enjoy being newly married. The combination of the boats, water, warm evening light, and the two of them together created one of those quintessential Cleveland wedding-photo moments.
Inside the club, the celebration continued with a lively reception and plenty of dancing. When guests needed a break from the dance floor, the outdoor balcony offered beautiful sunset views over the water. It was one more reminder that the Cleveland Yachting Club is such a distinctive setting for a wedding. It gives guests the energy of an indoor reception while still keeping the lake and waterfront very much part of the experience.
Eventually, dancing took over the evening.
What stood out most about Lauren and Nathan's wedding wasn't simply the beautiful setting, the sunshine, or even the dramatic Lake Erie wind. It was how much personality and connection their day had. There were many wonderful moments, and that's what makes wedding photography so rewarding.
The best photographs aren't always the ones you planned ahead of time. Sometimes they're the ones created by a gust of wind, an unexpected laugh, a private joke, a tear during a vow, or a spontaneous walk down the docks at golden hour. Lauren and Nathan, thank you for trusting us to document all of it.
